LECTURE

Week 1: Introduction/ Typographic Systems
Since our first ever class for this module lands on a Merdeka Public Holiday, Mr Vinod prepared a YouTube video for us to watch so we will still be on track with our lesson for this module.

In the video, Mr Vinod gave an explanation for our MIB (Module Information Booklet) which talked about what are we to expect in this current module. He then gave out our first task which he wishes to see it completed in the following week.

What is Typographic Systems?
Typographic Systems are systems that provide a structure for designers so they could use to organize their compositions and make them coherent. These systems are broken down into eight major variations. Those variations are:

  • Axial
  • Radial
  • Dilatational
  • Random
  • Grid
  • Transitional
  • Modular
  • Bilateral
Axial:
- All elements are organized to the left or right of a single axis
- It does not necessarily need to be arranged in a straight line

Radial:
All elements are extended from a point of focus

Dilatational:
All elements expand from a central point in a circular fashion

Random:
Elements appear to have no specific pattern or relationship

Grid:
A system of vertical and horizontal divisions

Transitional:
An informal system of layered banding

Modular:
A series of  non-objective elements that are constructed in a standardized units

Bilateral:
All text is arranged in a symmetrically on a single axis

Week 2: Typographic Composition

Principle of Design Composition:

The principles of design composition consists of dominant principles such as emphasisisolationrepetitionsymmetryasymmetryalignment and perspective

The Rule of Thirds:

- The photographic guide to composition
- It basically says that it can be divided into 3 columns and 3 rows
- The intersection lines are used as guides to place the points of interest within the given space

Typographic Systems:

- Consists of 8 type systems
- The Grid System (aka Raster System) is the most pragmatic and most used system
- The Grid system is also derived from the grided compositional structure of Letter Press Printing

Other models/System
Environmental Grid:

- The exploration of an existing structure or numerous structure combined together
- It could said as an Architectural Structure or Painting or even several paintings

Form and Movement:
- It is an exploration of an existing grid system
- This system is develop to explore
< the multitude of options the grid offers
< to dispel the seriousness surrounding the application of the grid

INSTRUCTION

Typographical Systems

For our first ever task, Mr Vinod tasked us to watch a prerecorded lecture on Typographical Systems. Through this video we learnt there are 8 different systems which  are axialradialdilatationalrandomgridtransitionalmodular and bilateral. With the knowledge in hand about the 8 systems we are assigned to create 1 layout for each one of those 8 systems with given information. The fonts that we have to use are 10 typefaces that were given to us in the previous semester's module Typography.

After re watching the prerecorded lecture for the Typographic Systems. I opened up my Adobe Indesign and experimented on the layouts for each systems and below are the final designs for each of 8 typographic systems.

Type and Play Part 1

After the completion of the Typographic Systems task, Mr Vinod gave out our next task which is Type and Play Part 1. In this task, we are required to look for an object for example a building, a chair or etc and then extract out letterforms from the chosen objects.

While I was having trouble deciding on what object I wanted to do, I found a chair just in my room that I thought would work great for this task. Below is a picture of the image of the chair shown.

Figure 2.1 My chosen object

With a chosen picture, I decided to extract out letters from the patterns of the chair. Below is an image of the extracted words.

Figure 2.2 Letters from the chosen object

As I have already extracted out the letters, I decided to take them out of the pattern and make them stand alone.

Figure 2.3 Extracted letters from the object

As I have received feedback from Mr Vinod, I decided to choose a different image to work with for this exercise. After intensely looking a new object I decided to use ramen noodles for my new image. Below is the newly chosen image (Figure 3.1).

Figure 3.1 New Chosen Image

After I have decided to choose a new image, I started working on tracing out letters from my chosen image. The image below ( Figure 3.2) shows the letters that I was able to trace out.

Figure 3.2 Traced Out Letters on the Chosen Image

After tracing out the letters from the images, I decided to extract it onto an artboard to see how they all look like.

Figure 3.3 Extracted Letters from Chosen Image

I found that I really liked the letter C and feel like it gives the springy feel of the ramen noodles. This made me decide to work around with the letter C with all the other letters. Below is the completed and tweaked version of my extracted letters.

Figure 3.4 Tweaked and Redid Extracted letters

What I tweaked for each letter:

C:
 Left it as the original

D:
I didn't apply much changes to the letter D cause I really liked how it looked so I just tweaked the top end of the letter D to make it have a similar curve to the letter C.

G:
Tweaked the base of the letter G to make it look similar to the letter C. The curve that sits between the base of the letter G I decided on using the same curve as the bottom half of the letter S.

L:
Made adjustment to the letter L  where it has the similar curve to the bottom part of the letter C.

O:
For the letter O, I decided to combine two letter C's and make it into a circle to form an O.

S:
Made adjustments to the letter S whereby I used two copies of the letter C to come up with the letter S.

While looking over the letter forms that I came up with, I don't feel too happy with how it looks so I decided to remove it from my final submission for this exercises.

Type and Play Part 2
After the completion of Type and Play Part 1, Mr Vinod gave out our next exercise which is the second part of the Type and Play. In this exercise we are required to combine typography with an image as though the typography is part of the image following either one of the themes below:

1. Culture Prosperity - Celebration: A Totem of Renewing Festive Culture
2. Renewal of Life - Return: Contemplate human beings' relationship with all things

For this task, I decided to go with the first topic since I found that it would be easier to come up with ideas for it.

As I was walking around a mall, I was able to come up with an idea that I found was great because of how I really liked the scenery of that part of the mall. Below is the raw photo that I took of the scenery that I wish to use for this task.

Figure 4.1 Taken Photo

Before adding any typographic element into the photo that I have taken, I started to make some minor adjustments such as the brightness, contrast, saturation and removing certain objects that are unnecessary to the image. I then readjusted the photo size to the required size which is 3000 x 6000 pixels. The image below (Figure 4.2) is the updated version of the image.

Figure 4.2 Edited Image

With the image edited, I decided to start adding in the typographic elements into the image. Below is the final result of my Type and Play Part 2 exercise.

FEEDBACK

Week 1:
No Feedback (Merdeka Holiday)

Week 2:
General Feedback:
No Feedback received. No work showed

Week 3:
General Feedback:
Mr Vinod looked over my Type and Play part 1 progression

Specific Feedback:
The chosen object for extraction is not a great choice.
Instead of taking certain triangles to form letters should take all the triangles as a whole.

Week 4:
No Feedback received. No work showed.

Week 5:
No Feedback received. No work showed.

Week 7:

REFLECTION

Typographical Systems:

I found this exercise to be quite challenging because I had such a hard time to come up with really good layouts for the texts that were provided and with the little time we had to complete the task made this task even more challenging.

Type and Play Part 1:

Even though this exercise was quite tough and challenging. I actually liked the idea of this task, I found the letter extraction to be quite fun but having to develop them into a font was a really hard and I really wished my work could look even more better cause I'm honestly not as satisfied with the work I have provided and I feel like the extracted letters could be developed better.

Type and Play Part 2:

I found this exercise to be quite interesting though I initially did have trouble trying to come up with an idea. Overall I'm quite happy with the work that I came up with even though I feel like it could look even better.

FURTHER READING

Since our first ever task is about typographic systems, I decided to choose a book in regards to the task I was doing. In the section that I read they talked about Project Elements and Process.

What I understood from the section that I read was that designers no longer need to use the rigid horizontal and vertical grid systems to convey messages. They could use a more fluid means to come up with a typographic message with the use of the 8 typographic systems which are Axial, Radial, Dilatational, Random, Grid, Modular, Transitional and Bilateral.
