Design Principle
Project 3
TASK
For our final project, we are required to do a visual analysis where we have to study a design from a movie poster or an album cover or even our favourite movie scene which we later then have to write a 3 phases analysis (Observation, Analysis, Interpretation) and later on create a design inspired by the design that we have studied.
IDEATION
After hours of looking over for some ideas, I decided to to go with a movie poster from a movie I lovedObservation:
This design is made in a portrait format. The main colours used in the design are mostly gradients of blue and purple. In the picture, we can see that on the top of the poster shows the movie title and which then the eyes will linger to towards the cloud and finally the viewer will see the boy and girl standing on a pile of rocks.
Analysis:
From the design, we can see that there is a huge purple sparkle in the bottom centre of the poster which shows symmetrical balance. There is a huge emphasis on the purple sparkle to indicate the two main characters of the story meeting each other. There are two shooting stars in the sky which one is in blue and the other in pink to show that the two main characters universe collided to meet each other.
Interpretation:
This poster is for a famous Japanese animated movie called Kiminowa which in English it translates to is Your Name. This film was released in 2016 which it was produced by CoMix Wave Films and directed by Makoto Shinkai

Over the weekend while I was cleaning up my room, I found some of my favourite storybooks on my bookshelf. While I was looking through the storybooks I really liked the cover of one of the storybooks which made me decide to switch to study this book cover instead of the book cover.

Observation:
This design was made in a portrait format. On the very top of the design, the viewer can see the authors name followed by a white crescent. In the very centre of the design, the viewer can see the title of the book which then leads their eyes to a horizontal curved white line that forms a heart shape. Surrounding the sides of the design the viewer can see a combination of white and red hearts formed as a border. This design gives off an asymmetrical balance as the character in the design stands on the very far left of the design. Towards the right of the design, the viewer can see silhouettes of 3 girls and a combination of white vertical curved lines standing in front of them. From there the viewer can see a curved rectangle standing behind the vertical curved lines. For this design, the colours used are mainly cool colours such as the colour purple.
Analysis:
This design shows a huge emphasis on the book title since it gives off contrast with the colours used in the background. The use of cool colours in the design and the white crescent on the very top of the page is to show that the scenery of the design is taking place at night. The girl characters hair and dress show a sense of movement as if it was slightly blown by the wind. The combination of vertical curved lines also shows a sense of movement as it is trying to show a fountain that is squirting out water in a downwards motion. The building behind the fountain shows a sense of distance as if it were further away from the main girl character.
Interpretation:
This design was made for the 4th book out of the ongoing "I Heart" book series. This specific book was published in the year of 2011 and was written by a British author by the name of Lindsey Kelk who once used to work as a children's book editor. This book tells a tale of a British girl named Angela Clark having a weekend getaway in Vegas with her best friend Jenny to forget the troubles that she is currently going through.

After I completed writing up my 3 tier analysis, I started sketching up an idea for my own design.

Figure 1.1 Sketch idea 1 and a clearer picture of the idea
Based on the design that I've made, I thought to myself what if this "I Heart" series created a version where the main character goes to Malaysia? After a long thought, I felt that among all of the parts of Malaysia as a tourist they would always visit the city of Malaysia which is Kuala Lumpur.
After doing a little bit of research, the most common places that tourists would visit would, of course, be the Petronas Twin Towers. Aside from that, they would also visit the KL Tower to see the whole of Kuala Lumpur. Which of course I will include both of the infamous buildings in my sketch. As a person who was born and raised in Selangor that always visits Kuala Lumpur pretty often, while on a drive to KLCC I would always pass by a historical building which is the Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad. I would always see tourists buses there and a lot of tourists taking pictures by the building as well as the field on the opposite of the building where it goes by the name of Dataran Merdeka. From there I decided to include those 2 places as a part of my sketch. For my main character, I felt that why not have her wear a traditional outfit like the baju kurung since she is paying a visit to Malaysia and finally I decided to add in a small detail which is by adding our local car the Proton Saga.
Figure 1.2 Sketch idea 2
For my second sketch idea, I was inspired by how beautiful the book cover made Vegas look which gave me my second sketch idea where I decided to sketch out Suria KLCC and how beautiful it looks at night with the colourful fountain and would have fireworks when there's a special celebration like New Year's Day and of course the main character would still be wearing a traditional Malaysian outfit to show how she is enjoying her visit in Malaysia.
After looking over both my sketch ideas I decided on proceeding with the first one it shows more of more elements of Kuala Lumpur.
(28/11)
After receiving feedback from Ms Jinchi, I decided to draw out a new sketch for my design before proceeding with a digitally made one.
FEEDBACK
Week 11Ms Jinchi approves the design that I have chosen
Week 12
Ms Jinchi mentioned that I should write more for my 3 tier Analysis
Week 13
I didn't get any feedback since I wasn't able to attend class
Week 14
Ms Jinchi said that I my design looks very cluttered. She also mentioned that my design should reflect more on the design that I did for my visual research which make it more book cover like.
