LECTURE

Week 1
For our first lesson, we were introduced to our two new lecturers which are Ms Anis and Ms Jennifer. They both gave a brief introduction of themselves and Ms Anis started her briefing. In the briefing, Ms Anis talked about what we will be learning in this module and what are some of the future tasks we had to complete. She too showed us students past work to show us an example. We were also given out our first ever task that had to be started on which is the vormator challenge.

INSTRUCTION

Exercise 1: Vormator Challenge
For our first ever task for the semester (Vormator Challenge), It requires us to use a given set of shapes and form them into any character of our own choice. The challenge here is that we can resize and rotate the shapes to create our character but we are not allowed to distort the shapes in any way. The shapes that we were given are shown in the image below.

Figure 1.1 Vormator Shapes

In my first attempt, I decided to try and combine the shapes that we were given to us to form some vormator characters. Below are some of the characters that I have formed.

Figure 1.2 Vormator Characters Attempt 1 (1/09/2021)

After looking at some of my fellow classmates work and receiving the feedback by Ms Anis regarding my first attempt at the vormator characters, I realize that I had to start off by doing sketches first instead of straight away attempting the character making process with the shapes. From there I decided to brainstorm ideas on what kind of characters or creatures that I liked for me to get some inspiration for me to create a sketch.

With the long hours of brainstorming, I finally found what my vormator character was going to be based off. Over the past two years I have been watching a French cartoon tv show named Miraculous Ladybug. In the cartoon series, there are these flying creature called kwamis I found them really adorable and so I thought of creating a kwami of my very own. Below are some pictures of these creatures called kwamis.

As I have finally found a base idea for my vormator character, I started working on sketching my kwami character design. The picture below shows the sketch I made for my vormator character.

Finally after completing my character sketch, I was quite happy as how it turned out and so I decided to begin the digitizing process in Adobe Illustrator. In the image below shows the outline of shapes that I used to create the character.

After completing the character shapes, I started browsing for some nice colour pallettes that I could use for my vormator character. I found two colour palettes that I really liked so I decided to try out both of the colour palettes that I chose. The pictures below shows the results of the use of the colour palettes for my character.

Figure 1.7  Vormator Character Color Palette 2 (6/09/2021)

After adding colours into my vormator character, I actually couldn't decide as to which of the color palette I should use because I really liked both of the color combinations so I decided to consult with Ms Anis and asked her for her opinion.

After receiving the given feedback by Ms Anis, I went with the first color combination. She even gave me feedback on some other aspects of my character which the amended one is shown in the picture below.

After making amendments to my character, I decided to consult back with Ms Anis on my character and she said it looked better and gave me even more feedback on how I could make it look even more great. With the given feedback, I made the necessary adjustments to my character and was quite happy with my vormator character design.

Figure 1.9  Final Vormator Character aka Lizzee (14/09/2021)

As I have fully completed my vormator character, I realized that I forgot to give her a name. To me I felt that she looked like a lizard hybrid so from that I decided to name my character Lizzee.

Exercise 2: Game Card Design
After completing our first exercise the Vormator challenge, we were then given our new task which is to create a playing card for our created vormator character.

As for my playing card design, I had a rough idea on how I wanted the layout to be like so I started sketching out my playing card design. The pictures below shows the front and back of my playing card.

Figure 2.1  Playing Card  Front (15/09/2021)

Figure 2.2  Playing Card  Back (15/09/2021)

After finally completing my card design sketches, I decided to start digitizing the design into Adobe Illustrator. The pictures below are my completed digitized card design.

Figure 2.3 Digitized  Playing Card  Front and Back (21/09/2021)

After completing my card design, I decided to consult back with Ms Anis on my card design and she gave me some feedback on what I should fix on. With the given feedback I made the neccesary adjustments and was quite happy with my playing card design so I decided that I would use it as my final card submission.

FEEDBACK

Week 2:
The vormator characters I created looked quite childish. Before starting on any character digitization I should work on creating character sketches first

Week 3:
Ms Anis said that I should go with the (Figure 1.6) color combination as it reflects the character expression more. She said the overall character design looks good just that maybe I should add hair infront of her head so my character doesn't look bald.

Week 5:
Referring to (Figure 2.3) The overall card design looks good just that the grass positioned in front of the eggs looks quite awkward. The font used for the text in the sign bored should be changed to san serif fonts.

REFLECTION

I found both exercise 1 and exercise 2 fun yet challenging. Through this exercises I was able to discover many tools and effects that could be done in Adobe Illustrator.
