LECTURE

Week 1
For our first ever lesson, Mr Martin thought us the idea of Video and Sound Production. Through the lecture, we learnt of the 3 stages of production. Which are:

1. Pre Production

2. Production

3. Post Production

During the Pre Production phase, we learnt that this is where all the ideations on what wants to be filmed happen. The planning of storyboard, the choosing of location, the need of props and etc.

While in the Production phase is where all the ideations come to life and happen. This is the phase where we shoot the film and follow the plans that were made based off the storyboard that was planned in the Pre Production phase.

Finally in the Post Production phase is editing happens. During this phase they would look over all the clips that were shot during the Production phase and edit them to come up with the final work.

Following with the lesson, Mr Martin also gave us a briefing on what are we to expect as our assignments for this module. He even showed us some examples of our previous seniors works so we get the idea on what we got to do.

Week 2: Framing & Storyboard
In this weeks lecture, Mr Martin covered on Framing and Storyboard. Through this lecture, the many different shot sizes used in cinematography. Those shot sizes are:

  • Wide Shot
  • Medium Shot (M.S)
  • Medium Close Up Shot (M.C.U)
  • Over the shoulder Shot
  • Extreme Wide Shot
  • Medium Wide Shot
  • Close Up Shot
  • Extreme Close Up Shot
We also learnt the use of camera angles in cinematography with the use of  The Rule Of Thirds. Other than that, we even covered some of the use of camera angles too like

  • 3/4 Angling
  • 3 Dimensional Solidity
  • Camera Height (Low Angle, High Angle, Eye Angle)

Week 3: Storytelling In Film
For this weeks lecture, Mr Martin taught us about Storytelling In Films. Through this lecture, we learnt about the 3 act structure. The 3 act structure are:

1. Beginning (Set-Up/ Introduction to the Story)

2. Middle (Confrontation of Problems)

3. End (Resolution of Problems)

In the first act (Beginning), this is where the main character of the story is introduced and where the first plot point is welcomed into the story.

As for the second act (Middle) is where the main character would face obstacles or complications to reach their end goal. In this act too is where plot point two is introduced to lead us to the climax of the story.

Finally the last act (End) is where the end of climax occurs. This is where the main character finds the solution the obstacles or complications that they were facing which leads us to the end of the story.

INSTRUCTION

Exercise 1: Video Editing exercise
During our tutorial session, he introduced us to an Adobe software named Adobe Premiere Pro. He even gave a simple demonstration on how to use the software with a small exercise. In the exercise given, we are required to download a set of short videos and combine them to make them a whole video with the use of  Adobe Premiere Pro. By doing this exercise, Mr Martin hopes that we could familiarize ourselves with the Adobe Premiere Pro software.

This exercise was quite simple as all the clips that were broken down were all already in order so it didn't need much work to be done to it.

With the demo exercise, Mr Martin gave us another exercise for us to try on our own. Though in this exercise, the clips are mixed up and not arranged in the correct order unlike the previous exercise.

Figure 2.1 Short Clips to Download

Before importing all of the clips into Adobe Premiere Pro, I decided to watch all the clips one by one and decide the order on which clips should come first. In the below list shows the arrangement of the clips in order
  1. doritos001
  2. doritos012
  3. doritos008
  4. doritos014
  5. doritos015
  6. doritos010

  10. doritos019
  11. doritos003
  12. doritos020
  13. doritos018
  14. doritos005
  15. doritos016

  17. doritos007
  18. doritos004
  19. doritos011
  20. doritos009
  21. doritos021
With the clips all organized I imported all the clips into Adobe Premiere Pro and inserted the clips based on the order that I have done.

After rearranging them into Adobe Premiere Pro I imported it and below is the final full video of the rearranged clips.

Video Editing exercise (Lalin)
In this exercise, we are required to download a set of clips that are given to us by Mr Martin in Google Drive. With the downloaded clips we are to compile them accurately with the use of Adobe Premiere Pro.

Figure 4.1 Clips to Download

With all the clips downloaded I imported them all into Adobe Premiere Pro and that's where the editing process begins. The below screenshot shows the compiled clips in Adobe Premiere Pro software.

After completing the video in Adobe Premiere Pro, I exported it out and uploaded it onto youtube. Below is the video of the completed video.
