INSTRUCTION

Task 2A: Key Artwork

After completing all of our Task 1 (Exercises), Mr Vinod briefed us on our next next task which is Task 2A (Key Artwork). In this exercise, we are required to create a typographic monogram with the use of either our name, initials or even our nickname.

As I was given the task, I decided to get to work immediately. The first thing I did was deciding on which part of my name I wanted to use for this task.

After a while of deciding, I decided to go with the two below options to work with for this task.

NAN:
This initials is basically a short form for my full birth name that was given to me Nur Allyssa Nabilah.

LYLY:
This name is a nickname that I would usually refer myself to when I'm using my social medias.

With the letter combination deciding out of the way, I started on getting to work on my typographic monogram with my chosen letters. I decided to use Adobe Illustrator to come up with some ideas for my typographic monogram.

In Adobe Illustrator, I began by exploring all of the font options that are present in Adobe Illustrator and picked out some of the fonts that I personally liked and would suit the letter initials that I have chosen . Below are some ideas of typographic monograms with the use of the chosen fonts from Adobe Illustrator.
Figure 5.1 Key Artwork Ideas

With the feedback I have received from Mr Vinod about my key artwork ideas I decided to narrow down the designs that I really liked among the ideas I have created. Below are ideas that I chose.

Figure 5.2 Narrowed Down Chosen Ideas

Between the 5 designs that I have created, I was really drawn towards my 2nd and 5th idea. This is because I found that these 2 ideas have more hints of creativity as comparison to the other 3 (1,3,4 in Figure 5.1) that I have designed. Since I want to showcase myself as a designer I felt that I should go with one of these 2 ideas.

After looking over the 2 designs that I have narrowed down, I realized that I was able to come up with a great rationale for idea no. 1 (from figure 5.2) so I decided to work with the no.1 idea.

With the idea no.1 (from figure 5.2) being what I want to work with as my key artwork. I decided to tweak some parts of it to enhance the idea better to go well with the rationale that I have come up with for my key artwork. In the picture below (figure 5.3) is the completed design of my key artwork.

The idea behind it:

When I was looking at the ideas that I have narrowed down in the Figure 5.3 the first thing that came to mind when I looked at idea no.1 was like a road. With that in mind, I decided that my key artwork is to showcase the journey of how a new person would get to know me. When a person would first meet me, I would be really shy and quiet person where  but as time progresses on my personality would be showing even more and I would start being very loud and bubbly to the said person that I have met.

The way that I have conveyed it into the design is that I made the strokes of the letters NAN to progressively get wider.

As my key artwork has been completed, I decided to try out some color designs and effects that that could work with my design. Below are some changes I've applied in my key artwork.

As I have played around with the some effects and colours for my key artwork I decided I really liked the first one and the third one from figure 5.4.

After fully completing my key artwork design, I started to work on the Animated gif for my key artwork. Below is my completed animated gif.

As I have completed my animated gif, I started working on the collaterals using my key artwork design. Below are some of the collateral designs that I have done using my key artwork.

FEEDBACK

Week 6:
General Feedback:
The key artwork must be representative of ourselves, of what our personality or what we like and what we wish to do in the future. The key artwork must have a meaning behind it and have a sort of backstory to it. The key artwork that you create must be unique.

Specific Feedback:
Mr Vinod looked over my key artwork. Mr Vinod mentioned that its fine to experiment with the fonts just that there should be a sort of rationale to back up with the key artwork. The rationale as to why you like the key artwork must have a concrete reasoning.

Week 7:
General Feedback:
The key artwork that we create should be able to be conveyed somewhat accurately by any strangers that has a first glance look at it in comparison to what we wish to tell them.

Week 8:
No Feedback (Independent Learning Week)

REFLECTION

I honestly found this task in the beginning to be quite tough as I initially had a hard time coming up with a good key artwork. Once I finally achieved the final design for the task all the ideas for the animated gif, collateral and Instagram feed flowed in easily. Overall I feel like my key artworks and collaterals could be better but regardless I'm still happy with what I have came up with.

FURTHER READING

Since I was struggling to come up with a key artwork design, I decided to do some further reading on the key artwork (monograms) for a better understanding to help me with my task.
