Task 3: Type Exploration and Application

With the completion of Task 1 and Task 2, Mr Vinod gave out our Final task for this module which is Task 3 (Type Exploration and Application). In this task we are given a couple of options that we could do. Below are the options we get to choose from.

Choice 1:
In this choice, we are to develop a font that could be used to solve a larger problem or a solution within the area of your interest such as graphic design, animation, ui/ux or entertainment design. It could even be anything that isn't related to your area of interest.

Choice 2:
In this choice, we are to explore the use of typeface in the area of our interest and understand its previous use, identity areas that could be help improved. Then, explore the possible solutions or combinations that will add value to the existing typeface.

Personally between the 2 choices, I believe that I was leaning towards the second choice as I found the task much easier.

With that I decided to explore on what are some of the ideas I wanted to do. I was able to brainstorm 2 ideas for this task.

Idea and Exploration

First Idea:

Figure 9.1 Idea 1

For my first idea, I thought I would like to expand the typeface of  a video game title that I am currently very obsessed with which is called Valorant where I have shown in Figure 9.1. I thought that maybe I could use and apply the expanded font by doing promotional posters to help promote the game or create merchandises like jerseys, hoodies for the fans and players of the game.

Second Idea:

Figure 9.2 Idea 2

In my second idea, I noticed that the K-pop groups would usually have such unique and different typefaces that they would use on their album covers that have not become fonts so I decided that I would like to expand and complete a full typeface set for one of the albums. Out of all the albums that I looked over, I was really drawn towards the K-pop group Itzy's Guess Who album as shown in Figure 9.2. I thought that with the expanded typeface I could apply it by creating promotional merchandise such as a charm bracelet, mugs, posters to help promote  that album.

Between the two ideas I had, I decided to go with my second one (Figure 9.2). This is due because when I did an even more in depth research for my first idea (Figure 9.1), I discovered that another designer out there has already taken the typeface and expanded it.

Sketching and Digitizing

Finally after deciding on what I want to work with for this task I began the process of sketching out  all the letters for the typeface that I have chosen as shown in Figure 9.2. Below are all the sketches I have done for all the letters.

Figure 10.3 Sketches for  Letters W - Z and lowercase a - k

Figure 10.4 Sketches for  lowercase l - z

Figure 10.4 Sketches for number 0 - 9

With the sketching completed I decided to begin my digitization in Adobe Illustrator. Below is the completed digitized letterforms made with Adobe Illustrator. As I didn't have that much time I ended up with just completing the uppercase and lowercase alphabets.

Finally with the Adobe Illustration completed I began importing all of my letterforms into Fontlab 8. Below is a screenshot of my imported letterforms in Fontlab 8.

After all of that is completed, my font is exported and ready to be used by anyone. The provided below could be used to download my font.

Application

Now that my font has been generated and ready to use, I began by working on the applications that I wish to use for the fonts.

For the applications, I decided to come up with promotional merchandises to promote this group Itzy's comeback. Below are some of the merchandises I came up with for the group Itzy.

FEEDBACK

Week 9:
General Feedback:
Before creating a letterform or script you should determine what kind of platform or tool that you wish to use to create the letterform. The typeface that we create must be made from scratch and cannot be a rebuilt or modified of an existing typeface.

When writing up the E-portfolio give a small rationale of your created font. Let them know about what is it that you wish to do with the font and how are you gonna apply the the font.

Week 11:
General Feedback:
I let Mr Vinod look over my typeface

Specific Feedback:
He mentioned that my fonts should all have consistency in the strokes. He also pointed out that the letters like my letter 'N' should have a more lesser pointier serif so if people were to look at it from a far it doesn't look pointy.

Week 12:
No Feedback received as I was absent

Week 13
No feedback received as Mr Vinod had a personal matter to attend to

REFLECTION

I actually found this Task to be quite interesting even though in the beginning I had a tough time trying to come up with an idea. The workload for this task was such a painful process especially  the sketching and digitizing bit of this part. I honestly wished that I was able to come up with the the idea that I have submitted earlier so that I could've finished the numbers and the punctions. Overall I feel like the submissions that I have provided could have been better but yet I'm still quite proud of what I have done for this task.

FUTHER READING

To help me kickstart and get inspiration for this Task, I decided to browse google and happen to come across a site that kind off helped me out on where as well as how I would find my inspiration.
