Task 2: Text Formatting and Expression

As we have all completed Task 1 and submitted them, Mr Vinod gave us our next task for this module which is Text formatting and Expression. In this exercise, we are required to apply both the things we have done for Task 1 Exercise 1 (Type Expression) and Task 1 Exercise 2 (Text Formatting). For this task, Mr Vinod gave us 3 options of articles that
  1. We have to express one word of the article headline which reflects the article text with the given 10 typefaces
  2.  Create a  nice layout for the article context
We are required to use Adobe InDesign for the article layout and are allowed to use Adobe Illustrator to create our article headline type expression. Below are the 3 article headline options.
  • The Impact of Bauhaus In Modern Culture
  • Be Good, Do Good, Follow The Code
  • Visual Communicators, Unite! Manifesto 2000
Between the 3 headlines given, I felt that the easiest one for me to do a type expression was the first one which is The Impact of Bauhaus In Modern Culture. Before starting my sketch for my type expression, I decided to look up what exactly is a Bauhaus since I felt that this word of the headline reflects the article text the most.

After a through research, I found out that Bauhaus directly translates to "construction house" . It is also said that it was German art school in the early 2000.

With the information that I have I decided to search for pictures as how the Bauhaus looks like so it could give me an idea on how I could do my headline expression. Below is a pictures I found on as how the Bauhaus looked like.

Part 1: Headline Expression Design
After receiving the amount of information from the research that I did, I decided to start working on my headline design as I had a rough idea on what I wanted to do. Below are some of my headline design ideas.

Figure 6.2 Headline Idea 1 (27/09/2021)

Figure 6.3 Headline Idea 2 (27/09/2021)

The idea for both Idea 1 and Idea 2 are pretty much the same which is basically using words The, Impact, Of, In, Modern, Culture arranged in away where it looks like a house. Just that in the second idea I decided to add a bit of graphical elements so the expression could be seen even better.

During the headline making process, I realized that another word from the article headline could be used as an expression which was the word Impact. From there, I was able to come up with some other ideas too. The pictures below are some of my other headline ideas.

After completing all my headline ideas, I decided to start working on my article layout. Below are my article layout designs.

After receiving the given feedback by Mr Vinod, I decided to try out the suggestions he gave to me on my second layout design. The pic below is the result to amendments I did for my second article layout.

Figure 7.3 Article Layout 2 Amended (29/09/2021)

After the article layout 2 that I amended, I felt that I could do a better looking one so I decided to do an even in-depth research about the Bauhaus art instead. Through my research I found that the Bauhaus art style is a unique style of its own and influenced by modern and contemporary art. With the given information, I decided to go on Pinterest and look for some examples of Bauhaus art works.

The pictures below show some of the Bauhaus art that caught my attention and could be used as reference for my headline idea.

From analysing the pictures above, I found that the Bauhaus art would have the long lines in their artwork and the fonts they would usually used are bold also san serifs.

So from the pictures above I decided to apply those factors and tried to create a headline from it. The outcome is shown in the picture below.

Between the 2 headlines I created, I decided to try and create a design layout with the first headline (Figure 8.1). I felt that it expresses the word better. Below is the outcome of layout.

After completing the layout, I came to like the design layout and decided that it was going to be used as my final submission.

      FEEDBACK

      Week 6
      General feedback:
Mr Vinod looked over some of our article layouts. He says that in this exercise, we shouldn't do the entire task all together at once it should be done part by part.

      Specific feedback:
In my first layout design, Mr Vinod said that more research is needed to express the headline better. As for my second one, the article layout is better. He said that I should move the word "Impact" higher so it aligns with the paragraph and it could easily guide the viewers the direction to read. He also said that maybe I could put the leading text in 3 lines instead of a single line.

      Week 7
      General feedback:
Mr Vinod marked our final submitted article layouts.

      Specific feedback:
Mr Vinod mentioned that I should label my final jpeg submission. He also mentioned that my blog progression is good. As for my final submission, the headline could be expressed better as well as the ragging.

      REFLECTION

I found this task to be quite tough as compared to the the given previous task that was given to us. Even though we were given a video tutorial by Mr Vinod, I still had trouble on completing it and coming up with ideas but I'm still glad that I was still able to eventually come up with something and produce a final work even though I'm not too happy with it.

      FURTHER READING

      Week 6
In this weeks further reading, I decided to read up from the book called TYPOGRAPHIC DESIGN (FORM AND COMMUNICATION). In the page that I read (The Anatomy of Typography), I was able to learn about the basics of the language of Typography.
