Task 3B: Type Design and Communication
In our final task, we are assigned to create a Telegram Sticker of the
celebration of that we chose from a provided Google Sheet by Mr Vinod.
Figure 13.1 Celebration Options
From all the given celebration options I decided to choose 2 which is
- Selamat Hari Raya
- Eid Mubarak
The reason why I chose these 2 is because I felt that it would be easier
for me to come up with ideas as I myself celebrate it.
Before I began working on my own sticker designs, I decided to search for
some Hari Raya inspired stickers on Google Images and Pinterest to give me
some ideas on what I could do for my own sticker.
Figure 13.2 Hari Raya Stickers Inspirations (Pinterest)
Figure 13.3 Hari Raya Stickers Inspirations (Google Images)
Based on the research that I have done, I see that most of the Hari Raya
stickers would always include these into their stickers
- Ketupat Palas
- Mosque
- Crescent Moon
- Pelita Lights
With the information I had from the research I have done I decided to
start working on my own designs for my stickers. Below are some ideas that
I came up with
Figure 14.1 Hari Raya Stickers Black and White Attempt 1
(1/11/2021)
Figure 14.2 Hari Raya Stickers Colored Attempt 1 (1/11/2021)
Sticker Ideas:
Idea 1:
In my first idea I decided to do the ketupat as it really represents the
Hari Raya celebration and decided to add in the words "Eid Mubarak" into the
tiny squares that form the ketupat. As for the Taylor's Logo, I incorporated
it as the ketupats top ribbon and for the phrase"Eid Mubarak" I used the
font Bodoni Std (Condensed Poster).
Idea 2:
In my second idea, I created a mosque roof towering on top of the the phrase
"Selamat Hari Raya". For the phrase "Selamat Hari Raya" I used the font
ITC Garamond Std (Bold Italic) and to give the curve effect I
used the Text on Path tool. I also used the letter C with the
use of the same font to create a crescent moon to be added on the tip of the
middle mosque roof. As for the Taylor's Logo I incorporated in as the two
mini towers that a mosque would usually have. Below is a picture of a mosque
to visually picture the representation for the Taylor's logo.
Idea 3:

Changes Made from Attempt 1
For this design, instead of using the phrase "Eid Mubarak" I decided to use
the phrase "Selamat Hari Raya" instead as I felt that it could fill up the
ketupat even more. I decided to place the words on top of the ketupat so that
the sticker doesn't look to reliant of the ketupat and words would be more
visible.
With the current sticker designs that I have made, I decided to test by
importing them into telegram I used the Sticker Bot to import my
designs into telegram. Below is a screenshot of my sticker design in telegram.
Figure 14.4 Hari Raya Stickers in Telegram Attempt 2 (10/11/2021)
With the given feedback by Mr Vinod, I decided to continue reworking my
sticker design. I decided to take his advice into consideration and worked on
it. Below is an updated design after receiving the feedback.

Figure 14.6 Hari Raya Stickers Colored Attempt 3 (13/11/2021)
Changes made from Attempt 2
For this sticker design, I decided to try and make it into a circular
sticker. I decided to resize the middle ketupat bigger and added some
tinier ketupats hanging on each ends of the sticker. As per the feedback
given by Mr Vinod. I moved the phrase "Selamat Hari Raya" into the ketupat
so it would be more visible.
With this new sticker design, I decided to import it into telegram to see
how it would look like as a sticker. I used the same method as I did
previously did to import my previous sticker which is by using the Sticker
Bot. Below are screenshots of my sticker in Telegram.
After looking at my Attempt 3 design, I felt that the design was quite nice
and it was ready to be animated with the use of Adobe After Effects. Before
importing it into After Effects, I decided to separate the ones that I wish
to animate in each of their individual layer. Below is a screenshot of my
layer panel.
Figure 14.9 Hari Raya Sticker Layers (15/11/2021)
After I have done separating each of the elements I wish to animate into their
own individual layer, I imported the Adobe Illustrator file into Adobe After
Effects.
Figure 14.10 Hari Raya Sticker in Adobe After Effects (15/11/2021)
For my sticker animation, I just wanted to keep it simple so decided to
make the each letters of the word Selamat
appear one at a time and then the words Hari Raya come in afterwards. Below is a screenshot of my progression.

After completing my animated sticker, I attempted to download the
extension that requires us to import our animated stickers into
telegram. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to download the extension due to
my laptop not being compatible with the extension. Below is a screenshot
of the attempt to download the extension.

Installation (15/11/2021)
As a result, I just had to export my animated sticker into a gif. Below
are the steps I took to render and export my animated sticker into a gif
by following a YouTube video tutorial.

After going through the process of rendering and exporting my animated
sticker into a gif. Below is the results of the gif that I made.

After completing my gif sticker, I decided to get some opinions from my
fellow family members and friends. Based on the opinions, I felt that I
could create a better looking sticker design. As I still have time I
decided to rework a new sticker design. Below is another attempt of my
sticker design.
Figure 15.1 Hari Raya Sticker Black and White Attempt 4 (16/11/2021)
Figure 15.2 Hari Raya Sticker Colour Attempt 4 (16/11/2021)
I personally felt that after looking at my sticker design Attempt 3 (refer to Figure 14.5/14.6) multiple times the circle border doesn't look that pretty to me and I felt
that the bottom half of the sticker was very empty so instead I decided to
create a ketupat pattern as the background of my sticker. I then added the
mini rectangle so I could incorporate the mini ketupats as I really liked
those specific elements in my previous sticker design. I put the text
"Selamat Hari Raya" within the rectangle with the dangling ketupats so it
would be visible.
With this new design I made, I decided to make it into a sticker in
telegram to see how it would look like. I used the same method as the
previous two stickers that I have done which is the telegram Sticker
Bot. Below are screenshots of my new sticker design in
telegram.

Figure 15.4 Hari Raya Sticker in telegram Attempt 4 (16/11/2021)
In comparison to the other design I have done, I really liked this one way
better so I decided to proceed with animating it in Adobe After Effects.
As for the animation, I used the same thing as I did for the previous sticker.
Below is the screenshot as of what I did for my sticker animation.

After going through the rendering process and importing it into Adobe
Photoshop. I was finally done with my animated sticker gif. Below is the
results for the GIF.

Finally after completing my new sketch design, I'm really happy with the
final output of the last attempt design which is why I decided it to be
used as my final submission.

FEEDBACK
Week 11
General Feedback:
Mr Vinod looked over our telegram sticker sketches
Specific Feedback:
My third ideas are is too reliant on the graphical elements. My first idea
has potential and promising. More exploration should be done and lessen the
use of graphical elements.
Week 12
General Feedback:
Mr Vinod looked over our progression for our telegram stickers
Specific Feedback:
To fill up the empty spaces around the big ketupat I could add smaller
ketupats. The positioning of the wording makes some parts of the word
disappear as well as the ketupat disappearing behind the wording so instead
just put the "selamat hari raya" phrase in the ketupat.
Week 13
General Feedback:
Mr Vinod looked over our final submission for our telegram stickers
Specific Feedback:
Mr Vinod said that the foreground and background needs to be better separated, it could use a bit of critical analysis but regardless it was an acceptable sticker design.
REFLECTION
I found this task to be my most favourite task among the other ones that I have completed. The process of coming up with the sticker was quite hard and tiring to me as the many attempts that I have done weren't good enough. I do feel disappointed that I wasn't able to import the animated one into telegram. Overall I'm really happy and proud of the final outcome of my sticker. I would definitely use my sticker design I made to share during the future Hari Raya celebrations to my family and friends.
FURTHER READING
For my further reading I decided to read the Typography Referenced book. From this book, I decided to read a the topic on Type Design and Development. In this topic, I decided to read the subtopic in it which is The Past as Inspiration.
In that subtopic, it talks about how important it is for a designer to have a good visual history of past designs. As creating a typeface is a personal and a social thing both at the same time.
