INSTRUCTION

Introduction

For our final project, we are required to work in a group of 5 to 6 people and come up with a game prototype. The game prototype could be of any genre of our choice.

Since this module has a combination of Computer Science students, IT students and Creative Media students (like myself). I decided that I would like to collaborate with some students that were in other courses too so that I could get a different perspective for this project.

After that session of choosing which group I wanted to join, I ended up teaming up with one of my same course mate Abigail and teamed up with 3 Computer Science students named Amirul, Junyu and Alden.

Game Medium (What We were going to use to create the game?)

Before deciding on what kind of game that we wanted to create, we all decided that we should survey the various mediums of options that we could use to create our game. Below is a list that we narrowed down to create our game:

- Krunker.io
- Unity
- Tabletop
- RPG Maker

After a long and lengthy discussion, we all agreed on using RPG maker as it suited the rough concept we wanted go for video game prototype.

Brainstorming and Storyline Plotting (What is our game going to be about?)

Before beginning our game making process, we all thought that we should come up with a more solid concept and theme as to what we want to do for our video game. After brainstorming through ideas and scrolling through looking at other video game ideas, we thought of going with a Horror Survival video game.

Abigail (one of my groupmate) and I were tasked to come up with the plot of our video game storyline. Below is the storyline outline that Abigail and I came up with:

Storyline Outline:
- MC and her best friend are both fresh graduate high school students which they both have the same dream to go to X University. Unfortunately, only MC managed to get into the university and took the last slot for the entrance. Even though her best friend didn't get in she still congratulated MC for receiving the last slot but in actuality deep down she began to hate the MC for taking the last remaining slot for X University. Out of jealousy and hatred, her best friend decides to curse her by having unusual stress and hunger.

Gameplay Idea:
The idea for our gameplay is that  players will play as MC while she is in X University and she has to manage her unusual stress and hunger level or else she hallucinates which will lead to her getting attacked by monsters in her hallucination.

After coming up with this rough idea, Abigail and I showed the storyline that we came up with to our other groupmates. They all quite liked the idea we proposed which Abigail and I began to develop a more in depth and specific plotlines for the story.

As we progressively came up with more events with this storyline, one of  my groupmate Amirul felt that this storyline had quite big plot holes and felt that we should come up with a newer and better one. Even Dr Charles gave us feedback that we should improve the storyline.

With the help of my groupmate Amirul, he came up with a better and improved storyline for our video game. Below is the storyline outline that Amirul came up with:

After the rest of us groupmates looked over the newer and improved storyline, we all agreed to proceed with this storyline instead and changed the concept idea for our game to be an RPG story based game.

My Contribution (What did I contribute to the game?)

For our video game, it includes scenes where the MC has to attack general bosses and mini mobs to progress further into the story. Since Abigail and I are the design students of the team, we were given the task to design the bosses and mini mobs.

With the task in hand, Abigail and I began to discuss between the two of us as to what kind of general bosses and mini mobs that we wanted to do. We both decided to go with animal based general bosses and mini mobs. Below are the animals that we decided to create our bosses and mobs based off:

- Fox
- Spider
- Octopus

Between the two of us, Abigail was the better artist so she took up designing the general bosses while I  designed the mini mobs. Below are the mini mob designs that I did for the game.

Figure 2.2 Mini Mob Spider

The design elements such as the features and the color palette I've done for the mini mobs are referenced by the general boss designs that Abigail designed. The reason I did this is because I wanted my mini mob design to match well with Abigail's general boss design. Also based off my research as well as experience from playing games, the mini mobs that work under the general bosses would usually have slight details that match their master.

Finalization and Documentations

As the final submissions are getting close, we all as a group began to work on the necessary documentations that we need to do for our video game prototype such as the game design document, the group website and the presentation slides. Below are the completed and finalized documentations.

FEEDBACK

Week 2

Dr Charles gave us the greenlight to use RPG maker to make our video game prototype. He also said that we should continue to develop an in depth and better concept for our video game.

Week 3
Dr Charles said that at this stage we should already be finalizing the genre and concept of our video game prototype. He also said that we should have a more specific storyline.

Week 4
Dr Charles said that the plotline for our game could be even more stronger and said that we should come up with a script to help aid us for our game prototype plotline.

Week 5
Dr Charles looked over our progress in our game and mentioned that we have to come up with our elements for the video game such as the monsters in the game.

Week 13
Dr Charles mentioned to us that the submission date for our game prototype is week 15. He also said that the game document must be very detailed and must be inclusive of our report and manual.

Week 15
Dr Charles played some part of our video game prototype and the below videos are the feedback he gave us:

REFLECTION

I personally felt that among all the members I gave the least contribution because I felt that I barely gave much to the team for our video game. In terms of team compatibility, we all actually got along pretty well and I actually enjoyed working with them too because aside from completing our work together we had similarities in terms on what kind of games we like to play. Overall I'm quite proud with the game prototype that our group came up with and certainly enjoyed my time working with the group members I grouped up with though I wished I was able to contribute more.
